Meet the 2022 Tirlán Quality Grain award winners

ABOVE: Thomas Butler and his wife, Annabel, from Bennettsbridge in Kilkenny have claimed the coveted Tirlán Quality Grain Supplier of the Year Award for 2022. Included are Tirlán Chairman, John Murphy, (l) and Aoife Murphy, Director of Ingredients at Tirlán (r)

Kilkenny-based Green Feed Wheat grower Thomas Butler and his wife, Annabel, have claimed the coveted Tirlán Quality Grain Supplier of the Year Award for 2022, amid strong competition from across the country following a record harvest.

From feed beans to food grade oats, the annual Quality Grain Awards programme recognises the excellence of the top-class Irish crops delivered by Tirlán’s 1,100 growers each year.

The grower, from Bennettsbridge in Kilkenny, was amongst 13 top quality suppliers honoured for their dedication and attention to detail in grain production. Thomas and Annabel run the family farm near scenic Bennettsbridge. It comprises of 250 acres of tillage along with grassland and woodland.

Tirlán Chairman, John Murphy, said choosing an overall winner from among the 13 high calibre entrants was extremely difficult in a harvest year that was blessed with great weather, exceptional quality and high yields.

“The excellence of our suppliers is something we in Tirlán never take for granted. Generations of commitment, knowledge and expertise are what set us apart from growers all over the world. We’re passionate about what we do and it shows in the high-quality produce that comes from our family farms.

“Our standard-setting growers are the cream of the crop. We commend them on the exceptionally high standards they have set and for their continued dedication to quality, best practice and sustainability and their commitment to the sector.

“In Harvest 2022, we took in our highest ever volume of premium grains and delivered an additional €3 million in bonus payments to growers of these premium crops. We remain firmly focused on adding value to our premium grains portfolio through our investment in innovation,” said John Murphy.

Aoife Murphy, Director of Ingredients at Tirlán, said: “There has been a significant investment in cutting edge technology in our Innovation Centre, our team of Commercial, R&D, market insights and nutrition specialists, who work with our product management and marketing divisions to continuously develop our plant-based offering.

“Our high-quality Oat-based ingredients can now be found in a wide variety of food applications such as bars and snacks as well as plant-based alternatives including drinks, ice cream and chocolate.

“We’re continuing to expand our portfolio, build our expertise and evolve our offerings for the future in line with growing market trends. Key markets include North America, Europe and Asia.”

John Kealy, Head of Grains at Tirlán, said: “We doubled our grain volumes in 2022 through our high-spec Oats Mill in Portlaoise. We have ambitions to continue to develop our milling capacity and extend our capability to take advantage of emerging market opportunities.”

As the largest buyer and user of premium Irish grains, Tirlán paid out circa €100 million to grain growers for Harvest 2022 with a grain intake of over 300,000 tonnes.

Stand-out winner

There is a strong focus on soil fertility and rotations on the 2022 Quality Grain Award-winning Butler family farm, which is located in Co Kilkenny. Thomas and Annabel run a diversified farming operation near Bennettsbridge which is comprised of tillage, grassland and woodlands. In addition to operating a varied rotation of crops, they also have a keen interest in heritage wheat varieties. It is the wide range of break crops grown on the farm that helped them deliver the perfect conditions for a bumper crop of Green Feed Wheat. The winning crop averaged a specific weight of 80.8 kph and 11.0% protein at a moisture of 14.1% across 310 tonnes.

Upgrade for Tirlán’s branch network

Upgrade for Tirlán’s branch network

An €11 million investment promises to enhance the rural communities we serve

Pictured at the Tirlán CountryLife branch in Dungarvan were Tirlán CEO, Jim Bergin; Chairman, John Murphy; Retail Marketing Manager, Grace O’Dwyer and Head of Retail at Tirlán, Senan Foley

Tirlán has begun an €11 million plus investment programme to develop and upgrade its entire 52-strong local branch network, with work in our Athboy, Castlelyons and Bunclody stores already underway.

The investment package is part of a range of measures to futureproof our agri, retail and garden centre services in rural communities across 11 counties.

The branch improvements are ‘Living Proof’ of Tirlán’s commitment to serving the evolving needs of loyal customers in rural communities we serve for many years to come, while the investment also promises to support local jobs and rural economies.

The €11 million plus plan will include a significant upgrading of branch IT infrastructure with new technologies that will make the overall customer experience more enjoyable and efficient.

Speaking recently at the CountryLife branch in Dungarvan, Tirlán Chairman John Murphy said: “Tirlán’s branches are the heartbeat of many local communities and this investment signifies our Co-op’s commitment to playing its part in enriching the lives of those living in rural Ireland. We are committed to developing a modern network of stores that service the evolving needs of farmers and the communities we serve.”

All branches will be developed and upgraded over the next few years, with the addition of new Tirlán CountryLife garden centres at our existing branches in both Athboy Co. Meath and Bennettsbridge in Co Kilkenny.

The first new concept store revamp in Bunclody will be completed in early 2023. Senan Foley, Head of Retail at Tirlán said: “Our 52-strong branch network is the face of Tirlán in our communities. They are more than just an agri store. Today, our branch network provides critical services in a setting that many of our shareholders, suppliers and customers have a strong affiliation with locally. Over a year ago, we partnered with An Post subsidiary PostPoint to bring a range of convenient services to rural communities.

Today’s announcement is part of a wider investment programme that will not only further enhance our offering to customers, but also expand our role in the community.”

Phase one of the investment programme sees stores in Ashford, Monasterevin, Castlelyons, Athboy and Bennettsbridge undergo significant renovations, followed by phase two branches in Dungarvan, Kilmeaden and Tullamore.

Tirlán’s new branding will be rolled out across the reinvigorated network. This rebrand, which is already underway, will see agri stores rebranded to ‘Tirlán FarmLife’, and agri stores with garden centres rebranded to ‘Tirlán CountryLife’.

Further investment is being rolled out in areas such as people training and the development of Farm Hardware Centres of Excellence, along with enhancement of our TirlanFarmLife.com ecommerce customer offering, supported by the creation of a dedicated distribution warehouse in Portlaoise.

Chewing the cud

Chewing the cud with… Philip McCabe

Each month, we put the spotlight on a Tirlán employee and for our February newsletter, we’re talking to Philip McCabe

Ensuring that Kilkenny Cheese Ltd is ready to begin operations from January 8th next year is now top of the work agenda for Strategic Programmes Manager with Tirlán, Philip McCabe.

“I’m part of the Tirlán Strategy team and am currently working on a number of projects including the ORP Programme for Project Orange. A big part of my role at the moment is to make sure that we have the people and the processes in place ahead of our start date next January.

“We have 80 people to hire in the next year. A number of roles have been filled and some are currently advertised such as Automation Manager, Quality Manager, Planning Manager and Environmental Health and Safety Manager.

“We will have other roles coming on stream after that. All roles can be viewed on the careers section of the Tirlán website and elsewhere. Anyone who helps us fill these positions is eligible for a referral bonus, so we’re asking everyone to keep their eyes and ears open so we can attract the best possible candidates.

“It’s currently a very competitive recruitment environment as we have full employment. Having said that, these are unique opportunities for people to start in a greenfield dairy plant. The dairy industry is also a very stable industry, particularly when you compare it to what is happening in the tech industry at the moment.

“This state-of-the-art plant will be here for the next 60 years and beyond… We’re very fortunate to have fantastic partners in Royal A-ware and this new team will be responsible for a whole new way of processing cheese in Ireland. It will be an exciting place to work.”

Philip will be eight years in Tirlán in April and revels in his role. He began as a HR Business Partner in Agri and was heavily involved in the transition to Glanbia Ireland. The decision to go back to our cooperative roots was a very positive one, he believes.

“It has been a landmark year. The move to Abbey Quarter was fantastic and it’s great to have the teams together in one building. It has been a huge game changer for us and it’s great to be back in the same building as the agri team, many of whom I wouldn’t have seen because of Covid. I really like the idea of being a cooperative and that we are returning shareholder value to our suppliers and our communities.”

How does he unwind from the demands of such a challenging role? “I do a bit of jogging. I have small children so unfortunately I’ve no time for golf or cycling presently! I like following Meath football in good times and bad. It’s great to see my old Economics teacher in charge of the team and Sean Boylan on the line!

“I’m also proud to be on the board of the local cancer charity, Cois Nore, and am delighted to see Tirlán sponsor the local 5k run. Every euro raised by the charity is put to good use in offering services that wouldn’t be available in Kilkenny otherwise.”

Cheese Hub

Cheese Hub

Tirlán’s ‘Cheese Hub’ is optimising value for Tirlán

Did you know that Tirlán produces 100,000 tonnes of awarding winning cheese annually across our two state-of-the-art facilities in Ballyragget and Wexford?

To best optimise the value of our cheese category, a collaborative ‘Cheese Hub’ was set up in H2 2022. The #CheeseHub is a cross functional team with representatives from Operations, Grading, Planning, Quality, Logistics, Customer Service, Finance, R&D, Marketing & Commercial.

Commercial Associate and Cheese Hub Member Lisa Robinson Sweeney said: “The purpose of the Cheese Hub is to best align the business and return the best value for the cheese category. This is achieved by having the right people in the room working together to streamline decisions and get projects over the line. By having all stakeholders involved in these decisions from the very start, it avoids problems further down the line. A good example of the hub ‘Collaborating for Success’ has seen hub members working collectively over the last couple of months to optimise our sweet mature recipe for the year ahead.”

The 2023 Cheese Hub [pictured below] kicked off last month in the Customer Experience Centre in Abbey Quarter. During the first get together of the year, Cheese Hub members reviewed the performance of the Ballyragget and Wexford cheese plants in 2022 and looked forward to improvement projects for 2023. Cheese Hub members are also looking forward to the second phase of the cheese innovation workshop at Abbey Quarter in March and the highly anticipated commissioning of our new Kilkenny Cheese Ltd continental cheese plant in Belview.

A worthwhile charity

A worthwhile charity

Tirlán was proud to support the Cois Nore 5km run which took place at Kilkenny Castle Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

Set up in 2013, Cois Nore is a cancer support centre based in Kilkenny. The services are free of charge and they provide a range of therapies for those diagnosed with cancer including counselling, fatigue management and information sessions such as communicating with children about cancer.

Nearly 400 people, including Tirlán colleagues and 64 children, took part in the run which took place on February 6th. Speaking to Overherd, Cois Nore Manager Mary Dolan thanked Tirlán and the wider community for their support. “Cois Nore had another great year with our ‘5k for Brigid’s Day’ event in Kilkenny’s Castle Park. So many people supported our work through their participation and our amazing volunteers gave so generously of their time to help organise the event. We couldn’t have staged the event without the support of our business sponsor Tirlán, our media sponsor KCLR and our partners the Kilkenny City Harriers Athletics Club. We are a community-based charity working hard throughout the year to support people through a very difficult time in their lives and this event will help us to continue providing our important services.”

The run is an important fundraiser for the charity. It costs the charity approximately €250,000 a year to run their services. They have over 450 active clients on their books and have worked with over 1,000 clients in Kilkenny and the surrounding areas. This is the second year that Tirlán has supported the run.

Year of the Rabbit

Year of the Rabbit

Overherd catches up with colleagues in China to see how they’re celebrating the new year

Chinese New Year celebrations took place at the end of January as millions of people around the world enjoyed travelling to see loved ones for the first time in years as lockdown restrictions eased in China.

2023 is the Year of the Rabbit and people born in this year are said to be kind and quietly confident. They steadily move towards their goals, no matter what negativity others give them. With good reasoning skills and attention to detail, they make great scholars. They are social beings with an attractive aura. However, they find it hard to open up to others and often turn to escapism.

With the Year of the Rabbit underway, Overherd caught up with Tirlán colleagues in China to find out how they enjoyed the New Year celebrations.

Barry Deng, Key Account Manager

During the CNY, thousands of people return to their hometowns for family reunions. And I’m one of the returnees.

After getting home, I cleaned the house with my family, pasted Spring couplets, have reunion dinner and sent New Year wishes to each other.

My favourite Chinese New Year tradition is to set off fireworks. It is believed that fireworks can take away the bad luck and make the New Year more lucky. Fireworks also make the atmosphere of Spring Festival even stronger.

Anne Chen, Assistant Marketing Manager

Pictured are ‘Fa Gao’ traditional Hakka dessert made during the Spring Festival. The top shape looks like petal which means the New Year with happiness, wealth and good luck just like blooming flowers, it brings the blessing to people and ancestors.

During the Spring Festival, family members prepared incense, red candles, foods and goldleaf paper to worship our ancestors and we pray for the coming year safety and happiness. Burning is regarded as a way of transmitting information to the invisible, so at the end of the worship we will burn the goldleaf paper to ancestors and gods.

Tracy Wang, Assistant Logistics and Planning Manager

The first day of the first lunar month is Spring Festival, the beginning of a New Year for China. The Spring Festival celebration is a continuous process starting from the 23rd or 24th of the 12th lunar month.

According to the Chinese traditions, people often worship the kitchen God, do Spring Festival shopping and house cleaning until New Year’s Eve on the lunar calendar.

We’ll paste the Chinese character ”Fu” and post Spring Festival couplets on door frames. The joyous atmosphere of CNY will linger until the first full moon of the first lunar month.

Claire Hou, Brand Manager

The annual lantern fair normally will open on the first day of the lunar New Year and last to January 15, according to the lunar calendar. At Shanghai’s Yu Garden, this year the lanterns are inspired from a Chinese ancient mythic text – The Classic of Mountains and Seas. There’s a very impressive Rabbit Lantern and kids are happy to get a small rabbit lantern.

Haley Zhang, Marketing Assistant

In my family, we cooked a lot of dishes this New Year. My dad also specially made sun shaped dumplings for me. My niece wore Hanfu to celebrate the Spring Festival on Spring Festival’s Eve, we all think she’s very cute and pretty. With the end of Covid-19 restrictions the streets are bustling again and many markets are open. There are also some traditional events in the market, such as Chinese shadow puppetry and sugar paintings. This year my friends and I also had the opportunity to set off fireworks together.

Sandy Ge, Tea Beverage Channel Manager

Before the New Year’s Eve, the family gathers in the elder’s home, and then pastes the word “fu” around the house. We then have fun setting off firecrackers and eating the reunion dinner. On New Year’s Eve the family watches the New Year’s Party together, perhaps playing with friends online or offline. When I was young my favorite thing was to receive red envelopes from elders. The Spring Festival means reunion when you grow up.

Steven Zhang, Head of Food Service Channel

During the Spring Festival holiday, I chose self-driving travel to adjacent province-Zhejiang. I planned to visit three places, however due to the traffic jam on the road I had to cut the intended route and reached only one resort finally. Someone pointed out this is a “Retaliatory Consumption” after three years Covid-19 activity restriction.

I’m happy to share with Tirlán colleagues some impressive scenes I witnessed blow.

Magnificent Hangzhou bay cross-sea bridge. It’s total 36km to connect two cities, where I think it’s one of the most unforgettable driving experiences.

Putuo Mountain is a well-known Buddhism paradise for Chinese people. According to the statistics 0.26million tourists visit Putuo Mountain within two days during Chinese New Year holiday. People pray gods to protect them a health and prosperous year of Rabbit.

Harnessing solar power

Harnessing solar power

Tirlán’s solar offer is a big hit with colleagues

Tirlán FarmGen’s partnership with PV Generation and Finance Ireland is giving employees the opportunity to reduce energy costs and become more self-sufficient through the use of renewable energy. To date, over 100 colleagues have expressed an interest in harnessing the power of solar in their homes with the first installations starting next month.

Agri Customer Service Representative Celine Ashmore’s experience with PV Gen has been extremely positive. “I couldn’t wait to avail of this staff, offer even more so now with the increase in energy prices and the need to move to alternative sources of energy,” Celine told Overherd. “I signed up for the offer in December, received an immediate response from a member of PV Generation’s team and arrangements were made for a site inspection in January. The surveyor arrived at the arranged time, viewed our house both internally and externally (with drone) and chatted with us to check for the most suitable configuration for our needs. A few days later we were provided with the proposed plan and are now awaiting installation of our panels next month. We’re very happy with the service from PV Generation to date.”

Thomas Ryan, Head of Agri-Sustainability and Customer Engagement added: “The FarmGen solar programme is a tangible example of the wholehearted commitment shown by our colleagues here in Tirlán and our farm family suppliers to reducing their fossil fuel use and carbon footprint while enhancing the rural environment. PV Generation have been installing bespoke rooftop solar solutions on farms and residential buildings since 2015, reducing energy costs for homeowners and farmers and contributing to our Living Proof sustainability agenda.”

Damien Sutton, FarmGen Programme Manager added: ”Working together with PV Generation and Finance Ireland, the FarmGen Programme offers a selection of fully financed, turnkey solar-powered energy solutions to Tirlán colleagues. The take-up of the offer has been fantastic so far and we’d love for even more people to come on-board to experience the cost savings and sustainable benefits of solar power.”
