Team Conversations – Bringing Our Values to Life

Team Conversations – Bringing Our Values to Life
An event in Ballyragget has helped employees more fully embody Tirlán’s Values
Over 250 Ballyragget employees came together recently in Castlecomber to hear about the plans and strategies for the year ahead. The full day, town hall meeting included a two-hour workshop session in the morning where employees talked through Tirlán’s core Values and how they can work together to live the Values in a more cohesive way.
Over the duration of the workshop, teams of employees were broken out into groups and each group selected a Value. “They read through the description of the Value they had chosen and talking amongst themselves, they chatted about the ways they felt they embodied the Value and how they could improve. Ballyragget is a huge site; it’s almost like four factories in one and people don’t often get the chance to interact with everyone. This event gave all participants the opportunity to come together, talk about our Values and also hear about the plans for the site in 2024,” said Sonia Baldwin, Senior HR Business Partner at Tirlán who helped facilitate the event.
One point that was raised during the workshop was the historical lack of diversity at Tirlán, something that’s changing within the organisation. “We have a number of graduates from many countries and backgrounds now and more women are taking up roles across a range of fields. I think participants at the event recognised that while diversity at Tirlán is in a growth phase, employees are very welcoming of it and they’re enjoying the fact it’s increasing. They’re open to making sure that growth continues.”
Healthy discussions were had by all who attended, with each team agreeing to commit to one or two actions to more fully embody Tirlán’s Values.

BridgeAbility Team from Portlaoise College shine a light on Celebrating Individuality
We were delighted to welcome the BridgeAbility Team from Portlaoise College to Abbey Quarter on Tuesday the 30th of January. The team presented their project on the challenges that autistic and other neurodiverse people have with employment, in particular for TY students gaining work experience. They described how the team are working with companies to increase awareness, highlighting the strengths that can be brought to the workplace and accommodations that can be put in place to ensure a comfortable, engaging workplace not just for neurodiverse people but for all. It was a privilege to hear their ideas on how we can make Tirlán a more inclusive workplace.
Their teacher, Sarah Rowan, mentioned how much they “really appreciated the time and effort Tirlán put into creating such an unforgettable experience for the students. It was so reassuring for them to see that their opinions count, that they have a voice and can promote change, even in the corporate world. They were so encouraged by the fact that the landscape is changing and Tirlán clearly embraces neurodiversity. This was clear from all the spaces in your building that have been created to meet the needs of all individuals.”
Well done to Rhona Howley on organising the visit. A special group that showed us how our differences make us stronger. #CelebrateIndividuality

Chewing the cud with… Amber Taylor
Chewing the cud with… Amber Taylor
Each month, we put the spotlight on a Tirlán employee and for our February newsletter, we’re talking to Amber Taylor, Regional Director Americas

Amber Taylor, Regional Director Americas, grew up on a large crop farm in Missouri and her role is to grow the market across the USA, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Latin America and South America, now that we have more freedom in sales.
The MBA graduate is on a mission to make Tirlán the go-to ingredient supplier and is passionate about building strong relationships with customers, both inside and outside of work.
Amber joined Tirlán in September of last year. She lives in St. Louis, Missouri with her husband Ben and three boys – Conor (4), Cooper (2) and Caden (10 months) and works closely with the network she has built over past experiences to marry value-add customers with Tirlán’s excellence.
“I have also been tasked to look for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) opportunities in the region to grow the Tirlán portfolio. Everyone is so kind and helpful. The diverse ingredient profile is challenging in a very positive way. We can bring Tirlán to many different companies through many different applications. I love my trips to Ireland! I am very thankful for the opportunity to grow Tirlán into a household world-class brand.
“Technology and innovation are at the forefront of changes. When I think there couldn’t possibly be more ideas to do with milk, lo and behold something pops up. One that really stands out is the cell-based agriculture and precision fermentation. It will no way take over the dairy industry, but it will surely be there to supplement dairy needs with food supply needs increasing and land resources decreasing.”
Customers make the business and Amber is proud to have cultivated many different customers with several top companies over the years. “Face to face visits with customers are the best way to develop relationships. I get to know the customers I manage. Most customers want to be heard and it’s my job to listen. Once I have heard what they really need, which is sometimes different than what they think they want, I offer suggestions and we work on things together.
“I like the teamwork approach. I get to know customers outside of work as much as possible. We develop strong relationships and keep up with each other’s families over the years. It is important to understand what drives the customers to help make the business most successful.
“The customers I work with are in various business sectors such as sports nutrition, infant nutrition, active lifestyle and foods. These customers applications’ include bars, dry mix beverages, ready to drink beverages, dips, yogurts, ice cream, snacks, cereals, bakery and the list goes on!”
As Amber continues to grow into her role, she is eager to continue the Tirlán legacy of world-class, increasing value-add customers in the region, thus equating to higher returns to the farmers for their milk and investments.
“Flexibility is key! Customers have ever-changing needs and it is important to pivot to those needs so that the business can continue to deliver world-class ingredients and service. This business is not a one person show, but rather a team that makes all the business come together. The US is poised for growth. I would love to see Tirlán invest in assets in the US from dairy and plant,” she said.
As for hobbies and interests outside of work? “I love spending time with my family. We try to do a beach trip once a year. We love to visit family, which is about 2-3 hours south of us. We love to go to the farm and take in the slower pace of life and get our hands dirty in the fields and with the animals.
“When not working or busy with the three boys, I love to entertain and cook. I don’t do anything fancy, but it’s a good relaxed time with plenty of seconds. I also enjoy gardening. We moved into our home about a year ago. My husband and I have lots of outdoor projects we want to do.”

Tirlán hosts Farmer Information Sessions across the region
Tirlán teams from across the business have been engaging with farmer suppliers over recent weeks as the annual Farmer Information Sessions got underway in seven locations across the catchment area, with significant numbers also registering for an online event.
The mood was positive and chairperson, John Murphy, commended suppliers for the exceptional resilience they have shown over the past year in the face of higher costs, weaker grain and dairy markets and periods of extreme weather.
He drew attention to the new opportunities available within Tirlán’s representative structure and encouraged interested farmers to get involved.
“Tirlán’s future success will be defined by the Co-op’s young farmers so we are establishing Young Farmer Groups across the Tirlán catchment area. These groups aim to build a two-way communication channel between young farmers and their Co-op.

Jim Bergin, Tirlán CEO said that Tirlán is close to completing the new €200 million Kilkenny Cheese plant at Belview, which is a joint venture with Royal A-ware from the Netherlands and that the Co-op continues to welcome new entrants to milk production.
Seán Molloy, Chief Ingredients & Agri Officer at Tirlán, said that the Co-op had a good year, albeit in the face of lots of challenges and thanked customers for their loyalty. Addressing the €11 million investment to upgrade and rebranding of Tirlán’s 52-strong local branch network, he said: “It’s really great to see where we made those investments, the very positive impact they had in the local area and indeed the great support we had in the local areas for the open days and for the continuing trade that followed. This encourages us greatly to ensure that we have that vibrant branch network as part of our offering to our customers.”
Farmer information meetings ran in Gorey, Kilkenny city, Clonmel, Navan, Castlelyons, Dungarvan and Portlaoise.

For participants, the Emerging Leaders programme helped bring Tirlán’s Values to life

In January 2024, the Capstone event for Tirlán’s Emerging Leader programme took place in the Newpark Hotel, Kilkenny. Designed to accelerate development and growth, encapsulating our Values along with our coaching behaviours, the Emerging Leader programme consisted of three two-day modules, complimented with one-on-one coaching with a professional coach. Cian Moloney, Advanced Analytical Manager at Tirlán, took part in the event, where programme participants teamed up to bring Tirlán’s Values to life.
“The Emerging Leader programme aims to give people the tools and skills they need to become leaders in the business. Modules were very much in keeping with our four key Values and demonstrated to us how we can lead in a way that promotes the Values,” said Cian.
The programme encouraged participants to think about the ways in which they approach tasks. “It led us to question ourselves, how we might approach certain situations and perhaps have a greater appreciation of the bigger picture and what’s really important. I think one of the biggest lessons for me is that you can’t control everything but that you can probably have more of an impact than you might think.”
The progamme also presented Cian with an opportunity to learn from the other participants. “The group came from right across Tirlán and it was an ideal opportunity to learn from others with different experiences. It was a great group and it was so interesting to see how others handle different situations. Everyone ended up learning from each other. It was a lot of fun too.”
Speak less and listen more was another key learning from the course. “I think people naturally tend to jump in to say they know the answer or volunteer information. For me, one of the biggest lessons from the course was that if you speak less, you’ll learn more and get a deeper understanding of things.” At the end of the programme, the group was spilt up into four sub-groups and each assigned one of Tirlán’s Values. Each group was tasked with delivering a presentation to senior leaders at Tirlán on how their Value was embedded into the business. “We had to communicate what the Value really means and what we can do every day to ingrain it into our working life. It was great working with Emma, Joanne and Steve and on the day it was a bit nerve-wracking, but it went well! It was a great exercise to really make you think. We have these four core Values that we see all the time, but I’m not sure we stop often enough to think about what they really mean, or what we can do to really embody the Values. The presentations were a great way to bring them to life.”

Getting to Know Seán Molloy
Getting to Know Seán Molloy
Seán Molloy, Tirlán’s CEO Designate, answers the questions on everyone’s minds

Above: Seán Molloy, CEO, Tírlán
Tell us a little about yourself Seán
Along with my wife Fiona and our three children, Katie (17), Jack (15) and Andy (11), I live on our family farm in Co Offaly. My wife and I are both natives of Co Offaly where we returned to live when I started working for what was then Glanbia Plc – having worked and studied in Dublin for the previous 20 years. Growing up on a dairy farm, I have always had a great interest in farming and agriculture, an interest which to a large extent attracted me to working in the dairy industry.
What does it mean to you personally to be Tirlán’s next CEO?
Given its heritage, the calibre and dedication of the people who work for it, the passion of its members and its industry leadership position, Tirlán is an extraordinary organisation. To have the privilege to take on the role of CEO at Tirlán is both deeply humbling and a great honour. This honour is all the more significant given that I am following in the footsteps of Jim Bergin who over a career stretching back 40 years has brought Tirlán to where it is today – an internationally leading Co-op, highly invested and brimming with ambition for its members and employees.
What can employees expect over the coming months as you transition into the new role?
Over the coming months I will be working alongside Jim Bergin and my ELT colleagues to transition into my new role. As Jim is not departing until the late summer, there is a good time period for this transition to take place. In the interim, I will also be focused on continuing with the responsibilities associated with my existing role.
Have you considered what your key priorities will be when you take up the CEO position later in the year?
From a strategy standpoint my approach will be to ‘ensure continuity’, to build on the enormous strengths that this business has established over the years under the stewardship of Jim Bergin and my ELT colleagues.
In an ever changing world, I will also be mindful to ensure the business is positioned to navigate the next chapter of its development. The strategic deployment of our investment funds, an increasing focus on value creation and an ongoing determination to ensure the centrality of our customers to our business strategy will all be critical to our future success.
Along with my ELT colleagues, my focus will also be on continuing to build on the culture of coaching that is the hallmark of Tirlán, to foster the development of our people, to deliver on our D&I and sustainability agenda and to ensure meaningful and rewarding carers for Tirlán’s employees. This focus will ensure Tirlán continues to be a beacon that attracts and retains the very best people in every part of our business. This endeavour will also require us to continue to have the courage to address the hard questions and to make the hard decisions to ensure the long-term prosperity of our Co-op.
My approach will be to continue as a Co-op to put our farm families at the very heart of our organisation’s ambition – striving to develop ‘Our Co-op of the Future’, uniting employees and farmers alike in what is a noble cause.
If there was one thing you were most excited about/looking forward to what would that be?
I have always drawn great energy from engaging with people. In that regard, I am looking forward to interacting with and further getting to know my colleagues throughout the business and indeed with our Co-op members and getting feedback on the ambition we all have for the future of Tirlán.
Tell us one thing about yourself that might surprise people?
I first applied for a job with what was then Avonmore some 30 years ago – and got turned down! At the time the interviewer (who shall remain nameless!) told me during the interview that ‘the job would not suit me’ and I would be ‘better suited to a career in journalism’!

Recipe – Oatmeal Blueberry Muffins
A family favourite, Oatmeal Blueberry Muffins are simple, wholesome and deliciously satisfying. The key to this recipe and the success of these muffins is the very first step… soak the oats in Avonmore Super Milk for 20 minutes. While this step will ensure the perfect texture and taste, adding Avonmore Super Milk which is fortified in Vitamin D ensures you’re also supporting your bone, muscle and immune health too. While the oats and milk soak melt your butter, pre-heat your oven and get your cases set. Mix the dry ingredients, all listed below and your wet ingredients before adding them all together. Once your oats are fully soaked add them, followed by the blueberries. Pop them into the cases and into the oven for five minutes at 220∞C then, keeping the muffins in the oven, reduce the oven temperature to 175∞C. Bake for an additional 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Et Voila! The perfect lunchbox snack or 11 o’clock companion! #AD #AvonmoreSuperMilk #VitaminD
