Tirlán goes ploughing
Tirlán was introduced at this year’s National Ploughing Championships
Tirlán made its public debut at the 91st National Ploughing Championships held in Ratheniska, Co.Laois, just days after our company’s new identity was launched. It was the first time since 2019 that the crowds were back in force, with up to 300,000 people visiting the ploughing over three days, making it Europe’s largest outdoor event!
In addition to this year’s trade exhibition and demonstration areas being the biggest to date, the Laois venue also had the privilege of hosting the 67th World Ploughing Contest, with 25 countries competing on Irish soil to become supreme World Champions.
Introducing Tirlán at the three-day farming festival, attendees had the opportunity to taste Ireland’s #1 dairy brand, Avonmore; meet a series of famous sports stars including Ireland rugby International and Tirlán Ambassador, Tadhg Furlong and members of the All-Ireland winning Kilkenny Camogie team and listen to seminars from the Tirlán team.
Our new identity was warmly received by the thousands that visited the Tirlán pavilion. Visitors lapped up a staggering 32,000 cartons of Fresh Milk, Super Milk, Protein Milk and Mooju over the three days. Suppliers were also treated to light refreshments which included hearty and refreshing Avonmore Vegetable and Tomato soup, teas and coffees as well as tasty treats.

Emerging and future Tirlán leaders gather at different stages on their career journeys
Capstone event rounds off leadership programme
Last month, 15 participants from our Emerging Leader programme met with senior business leaders in The Newpark Hotel Kilkenny to present their learnings from the programme and to discuss their leadership journeys.
The programme, which launched in December 2022, explored leadership capabilities with a focus on coaching and empowering others. This was, according to all involved, an inspiring event showcasing our emerging talent and highlighting the importance of leadership behaviours.
Speaking after the event, Beef Twenty20 Programme Manager Ross Brady said: “The Capstone event was a good way to finish off the programme by bringing all the emerging leaders together to showcase our learnings and highlight all the positives we gained from partaking in the emerging leader programme. It also gives the SLG who attended a good insight into what we learned over our time in the programme. Networking with the SLG team was also beneficial for our group.”
Vivian Gee, Advanced Analytical Senior Manager said: “I found the Emerging Leadership programme to be one of the most insightful, challenging and useful development courses I’ve taken part in. It gave me many practical tools, a more complete sense of self-awareness and a new network of friends / colleagues for my leadership journey and for life in general.”

Graduate programme Induction
Also in September, we welcomed our new graduates to Tirlán. The group of 15 who will be working across the business came together in Hotel Kilkenny to participate in a two-day induction event. They were welcomed by Tirlán CEO Jim Bergin and Chief People, D&I and Organisational Design Officer Michael O’Leary, who gave an insight into the business and our culture, including the importance of authenticity, psychological safety and our coaching journey.
Tirlán’s Head of Environmental and Sustainability Compliance Audrey O’Shea provided an overview of Living Proof, our sustainability strategy, and graduates were encouraged to become involved in our sustainability agenda. Former graduates also met with the group to talk about life as a graduate.
As part of a senior leadership session, Tirlán’s Head of Nutrition and Sustainability Innovation Michelle Collins described her own leadership journey and provided some valuable advice. A team building event helped to build the relationships that are an integral part of the graduate programme.
Please welcome and support graduates in your area to settle into the business as they commence their careers with Tirlán.

New identity, new era
New identity, new era
Tirlán, our Co-operative’s new identity, has launched to great fanfare across the world
Creating a new brand identity that represents an organisation’s past, present and future is no mean feat, and for Tirlán it was a year in the making.
To get an insight into the creative process and how Tirlán represents our Co-operative in a new era, Overherd caught up with one of the chief architects of our new identity, Head of Consumer Development Nicola O’Connell.

Tirlán’s Head of Consumer Development Nicola O’Connell launches our new company identity in Abbey Quarter, Kilkenny.
Nicola, congratulations to you and the team on the successful launch of Tirlán. It must’ve been quite a journey to get to the recent event at Abbey Quarter?
It has been quite a journey and I’d have to say a very enjoyable one, really, for the most part.
Approximately a year ago a small group including Andreas Mantis, Pat O’Keefe and I kicked off the process of finding our new identity with a review of a number of different branding agencies. By the end of last September, we had awarded the project to Siegel and Gale who have been strong partners with us on this journey.
With the agency and a supportive group of executives behind us, we set about discovering what we wanted to stand for as a business, using our values to guide us, and looking toward the future as a modern Co-operative. Lots of thought went into establishing that brand positioning up front and that really directed us to be able to consider the sorts of names that might be appropriate for our new business.
Choosing a name for a business is a very long and lengthy process because you have to work through legal considerations, what names are available, will the name be suitable in all the countries we supply into etc.
Eventually, we landed on Tirlán as the name we really wanted to progress and we took it to the board in early April this year, just after the transaction which formed the new Co-op closed. Thankfully, they really liked the name, meaning we could keep working on the look and feel of our new identity. From that point, the process expanded to a core launch team that have worked so hard to get us to the launches in Abbey Quarter, the satellite employee events across Ireland, China, Dubai and the US, along with the very well-timed event in Japan which tied in with an Irish trade mission.

From L-R Tirlán CEO Jim Bergin is joined by Brand Ambassador and Irish Rugby International Tadhg Furlong, along with Tirlán Co-op Chairman John Murphy.
The name Tirlán communicates as a ‘land of abundance’, can you give us more insights into how this new identity resonates with our company?
When creating a new identity for a company, the important parts to consider are who we are as a business and who do we want to be – how do we want to show up in the world if you like! Siegel & Gale spent time conducting stakeholder interviews across the business with several people in different functions, with the executive team and with a couple of the board members as well. They also spent quite a while leafing through a bunch of strategy documents and asking lots of questions, while they also looked at our competitors – the likes of Danone and Friesland to see what they stand for.
The agency then came back and said, ok this is what we’re hearing from you, this is what your competitors identify as and this is what we think best represents who you are, while uniquely positioning you in the market.
At its core, what we’ve created is all about balance. The symbol you see in our new logo was inspired by the inscription for earth or soil in Ogham, reflecting our farming ethos and provenance, while the horizontal line reflects balance between the land above and the soil beneath.
Tirlán’s identity has been very much informed by the balance we want to strike between nature – how we farm and nurture, how we produce food and ingredients for our global customers.
Our Co-op wants to nourish people with great food and ingredients that we produce, but the balance piece is important because as we embark on a new era for farming, we must care about the people who work for us, our farmers and the environment we live in. If we can do that in a caring way, then maybe we can stand out a little bit differently from other organisations out there!

Tirlán Brand Ambassador Tadgh Furlong pictured on a newly branded milk tanker.
So, we’ve launched our new identity. What can colleagues expect to see over the next few months?
Between now and Christmas, it’s really about getting the name out there and starting to bed-in before we formally start trading as Tirlán Limited on the 1st of January. The build-up to that is really about getting the name into customers and consumers heads, along with employees and farmers. Brochures and collateral are all ready to go, so you’ll start to see that going out to various trade shows. Our consumer team will be in Singapore and Vietnam over the next two weeks and then we’ll have trade shows in the US and Europe featuring Tirlán branding over the next few months, with Ingredients planning a big splash at FIE at the end of November.
Here in Ireland, we’ll start to see advertising on radio, in print and online. There’s already been a bit of that in the farming farmer facing media this week. Then there’s the big task of updating our building signage and our milk trucks – things that will become really visible. And then, on January 1st our email addresses will switch over. We have up until the middle of March to complete everything and I hope all colleagues enjoy seeing Tirlán come to life.
Thanks again to the core launch team who under the guidance of Pat O’Keeffe and steering of Ed Elder, have really played a blinder over the last number of months.

The future is green
The future is green
Over the past 12 months, considerable progress has been made in our Living Proof strategy
‘Living Proof’, Tirlán’s sustainability strategy, was launched just over a year ago. Much has happened since we stated our company’s commitment to farming, food and the future, with lots of work underway throughout our Co-operative, on the family farm and in our communities, as we live up to the promises made and targets set this time last year.
Our Living Proof pledges include a 30% absolute reduction in carbon emissions from our processing sites by 2030. We also vowed to work with our dairy farmers towards a similar cut in carbon intensity from milk production.
We promised to prioritise our actions in energy efficiency, packaging and plastic reductions, halving food waste, animal health and welfare, biodiversity and other areas.

We also signed up to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to show our clear and unambiguous commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by implementing the best science and technology.
Our overall ambition is to reach Net Zero Carbon by no later than 2050.
That journey is well underway and some of our actions to date include:

- We reached our Operation Biodiversity target of 100,000 native Irish trees and hedgerows in half the original timeframe
- We have championed education. In conjunction with our customer Diageo and Baileys Irish Cream Liqueur, we launched Ireland’s first ever Sustainable Farming Academy
- A dedicated annual fund of €18 million underpins the Sustainable Action Payment programme and is tailored to assist our 5,000 milk suppliers as they continue to enhance the environmental and economic sustainability of their family farms
- We worked with our suppliers to reduce carbon from milk production by 7% between 2018 and 2021.

- We are focusing strongly on energy efficiency, with all of our Ingredients and Agri production sites now certified to the energy management system ISO50001
- The Board has signed off on a dedicated sustainability action fund to support investment in renewable energies for our sites
- Our Ballyragget Combined Heat and Power Plant upgrade delivered efficiencies enough to reduce output by 1000 tonnes of carbon a year
- Our new Abbey Quarter collaboration hub is the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited neighbourhood development in Ireland
- Our teams are working hard to ensure our new joint venture Kilkenny Cheese Ltd plant under construction in Belview, County Kilkenny will be one of the most efficient and sustainable continental cheese production facilities in Europe.

- We moved to Tetra Top® packaging on our Avonmore Fresh Cream, Double Cream and Light Cream ranges which contains 62% less plastic than the previous bottles, without compromising on taste or quality
- We actioned the removal of plastic straws from the EU School Milk Programme
- An average of 1.5g has already been removed from each 2L standard HDPE milk jug with investigation underway on reducing the weight of our iconic Avonmore milk jug for significant plastic savings, without compromising on taste or quality
- For our cheese we have successfully reduced the thickness of the existing plastic film in our slice and block formats, with validation underway for our grated cheese formats, again without impacting on the taste or quality
- We significantly reduced food waste and through our partnership with FoodCloud, we provided 229,990 meals to families who needed them over the past year.

- 100% of GI milk is now Bord Bia certified under the Sustainable Dairy Assurance Scheme
- We also achieved the Bord Bia Grass Fed standard
- 97% of our grain is certified sustainable by IGAS
- Through our strong partnerships, we are building scientific evidence to demonstrate the health benefits of our dairy and plant-based products
- We co-funded the research by the Mercer’s Institute for Successful Ageing (MISA) and Trinity College Dublin, which highlighted the requirement for Vitamin D supplementation in the Irish population, strengthening the positioning of Avonmore Super Milk.
Some of these accomplishments are brough to life in the video below.
Living Proof as a strategy demonstrates how we work every day, but also sets out our pathway to 2030 and beyond.
Our efforts have been rewarded with several top awards over the past year.
We’ve won Bord Bia Origin Green Gold status for two years in a row; we’ve been awarded a coveted Health & Safety Award; a Silver medal for Ecovadis and a Cogeca Award for our Twenty20 Beef Club.
Every one of us has a role to play in making us one of the world’s most sustainably focused cooperatives. Thanks to everyone in our organisation for your individual contribution to our success in the last year and we very much look forward to the next chapter.
Chewing the cud with… Conor O’Donovan

Chewing the cud with… Conor O’Donovan
Each month, we put the spotlight on a Glanbia Ireland employee and for our September newsletter, we’re talking to Conor O’Donovan
Originally from West Cork, Conor O’Donovan has held the role of Senior Director of Market Development – North America at Tirlán for the past four years. It’s a role that has proved both challenging and exciting and one in which he has thrived; in 2018, Conor successfully led the launch of Tirlán’s first North America-based consumer brand, Truly Grass Fed. Since then, he has continued to lead the TGF team with agility, instilling within the group a positive, can-do culture.
“I’m responsible for the commercial development of the TGF brand across the US market, which started with cheese and then moved into butter. Myself and the team work together to build awareness around the brand and to ensure consumers know the story – that Tirlán is committed to small family farming and that 100% of the dairy used in our products are sourced from a Co-op of small family farms who are quite often third and fourth generation Irish farmers. That’s the story and background that consumers love to hear and really get behind.”
The Truly Grass Fed brand is really beginning to resonate with customers, says Conor. “I think that now we’re coming out of the pandemic, we’re refocusing our efforts on sustainability in particular. We just need to look around our own environment to see the effects of global warming. People are also beginning to ask questions in relation to animal welfare; they want to feel good about what they eat and what they give to their families. We’re very much in that space at the moment and we’re beginning to resonate with shoppers as we grow our distribution and get more product on shelf.”
Conor left West Cork for the US 16 years ago (“I told my mam I’d only be gone for about 18 months and she’s still asking me when I’m coming home”) before relocating to Chicago to take up the role at Tirlán in 2018.
“What I love about Chicago is the big city vibe you get here. You can get every type of food you can think of and there’s so much to do from a culture point of view. Every weekend there’s something new and exciting going on. The people here are also really friendly, they remind me of the warm welcome that people at home extend to strangers. The direct flight from Chicago back home is also a big draw. The long winter takes a bit of getting used to though. The temperature can drop to -22 degrees!”
Conor relishes the challenges that his role at Tirlán brings on a daily basis. “No two days are the same. Every day presents a new hurdle to overcome, whether that is securing a meeting with new retailers, something on the export side of the business, or an issue related to existing customers. When I’m describing my role to people, I often say I’m a bit like a fireman. I’m putting out a different fire every day, which keeps it exciting and makes sure everyone stays on their toes.”
When he first began working at Tirlán four years ago, Conor was told it’s just like working with family. “I remember thinking it was an unusual thing to say about a place of work. But four years later, I completely understand why people would have said that. To me, that’s exactly what it is, a family. Everybody’s input is valued and people are empowered to go out there and make the best decision for both Tirlán and for the customer.”
