Chewing the cud with… Lisa O’Rourke

Chewing the cud with… Lisa O’Rourke
Each month, we put the spotlight on a Tirlán employee and for our August newsletter, we’re talking to Lisa O’Rourke, Employee Communication Specialist
As a native of Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, I joined Tirlán’s HR team as an Employee Communication Specialist at the start of this year. I have learned a lot since joining the team, not only about Tirlán itself, but also about the significant role employee communications can play in promoting a positive workplace.
Leveraging my degree in Marketing, I enjoy the creative challenges of my role. These include delivering messaging across all of our digital and in-person communication channels. I’m proud of my work which can be viewed across our digital screens, on sites, in employee email bulletins, on our Tirlán Intranet or occasionally through our internal social media platform, Viva Engage.
Each day at Tirlán offers me a new opportunity to develop communications which will resonate with our people, whether that’s to inform, a call to action, or a nudge to engage in a conversation and learn more about a specific topic or initiative. I’d consider myself as someone who thrives in a sociable environment. I value the opportunity to collaborate with others across roles, teams, sites and countries! No two communications projects are the same and I love the opportunity to contribute across a broad range of initiatives, helping to bring them to life for our employees.
It is important to me that our communications are impactful, and whilst all news is not necessarily good news, I still feel our team can make a positive impact by promoting trusted, transparent and authentic communications – all the while promoting a positive outlook.
Following the warm reception I’ve experienced since joining the Tirlán team these past few months, I am filled with gratitude and enthusiasm for the role I can play in connecting people through inclusive communications across our business.
As if starting a new job this year wasn’t enough, I have also been selected to represent Kilkenny in the Rose of Tralee festival and fulfilling the role of Kilkenny Rose for a two-year period.
Since that momentous night when I became the Kilkenny Rose, it’s been a non-stop stream of events, ranging from charity functions and social gatherings to promotional activities for the festival. A particularly proud moment for me was the honour of serving as the Relay for Life Kilkenny ambassador for 2024, supporting the Irish Cancer Society – a cause deeply personal to me and my family.
My decision to participate in the Rose of Tralee comes from the immense pride I have for my home county of Kilkenny, for the values our communities uphold, and for the chance to honour my family’s unwavering support for me in such an impactful way. People have asked me how I feel about the exposure that goes with the role and whether I’m daunted by standing on such a public stage. But, as someone who has participated in musicals and pantos in Kilkenny from a very young age, I’m no stranger to the stage!
Tirlán’s Kilkenny credentials are well known and the encouragement and support I have received from my Tirlán colleagues means the world to me and I will be forever grateful.
The Rose of Tralee Festival kicks off on the 11th of August with a tour around Ireland with all 33 Rose’s before landing in Tralee on the 17th for the Rose of Tralee Festival. The televised events are scheduled for the 19th and 20th of August on RTE

Making packaging sustainable
Making packaging sustainable
Collaboration is helping Tirlán meet our goal of complying with the Single Use Plastic Directive
In an effort to combat pollution from single-use plastics, Europe’s Single Use Plastic Directive has mandated a significant change in beverage packaging – all containers up to 3 litres must have caps tethered to the main body. This initiative, aimed at reducing environmental dispersal and enhancing recyclability, has significant implications for the dairy industry, particularly for milk and value-added milk products.

Tirlán has proactively embarked on a cross-functional project to comply with this directive by the required deadline of the 3rd of July 2024. The project, initiated in February 2022, has been a journey of innovation and adaptation, with the first production for tethered caps introduced in August 2023 for Tetra top cartons containing Avonmore Protein Milk, Mooju and Avonmore Cream. Subsequent transitions occurred in April and May 2024 for various carton sizes and finally, milk jugs in June 2024.
The transition has not been without its challenges, particularly in managing the complexities of milk jug cap designs which require dedicated neck finishes from multiple suppliers. However, the project has also brought about significant environmental benefits, with an estimated annual reduction of 22.8 tonnes of plastic from caps alone.
The success of this initiative can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of the project team and production sites, who have faced challenges head-on, valuing diverse opinions and quickly adapting to produce solutions.
As Tirlán moves forward, the focus is on consumer education, with messaging on packaging that emphasizes the new caps’ functionality and the rationale behind the change. The messaging strategy is clear: twist, flip to lock, and close to recycle – a simple yet powerful reminder of the individual’s role in supporting a circular economy.
This shift towards tethered caps is a testament to Tirlán’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, supporting reduction of plastic, the capturing of the cap for recycling, all while minimising the cost impact to Tirlán.
The tethered cap project led by Joanne Dooley has been a remarkable display of teamwork and adaptability. The project and production site teams, including Eamon McGuigan, Paddy Cotter and 14 others, have demonstrated exceptional collaboration, quickly adapting and implementing solutions to meet the challenges head-on. Their efforts in trialling and testing contingencies have been instrumental in the project’s success.

Throughout the course of the project the teams have shown respect for diverse opinions, quickly adapted to new situations and actively engaged in trials to devise effective solutions. The combined efforts of the Site Teams in Drogheda and Ballitore have been instrumental in this success. Furthermore, the Core Project team’s contributions have been pivotal in ensuring the project’s completion across all SKUs before the 3rd July Single-Use Plastics (SUP) deadline. This collaborative success story is a testament to the dedication and hard work of all involved.
A special shout out to:
- Site Team in Drogheda – Eamon McGuigan, Frank McDonnell, Seán Murphy, Peter McGuinness, Catherine Kiernan, Helen Kearney, Hugh King, Site Operations and Supply Chain.
- Site Team in Ballitore – Paddy Cotter, Aidan Rowan, Brian Aherne, Bernie Shanahan, Ella Kennedy, Tom Walsh, David Cullen, Site Operations and Supply chain.
- Close stock management via Michael Floyd and Angad Nain.

Agri Aware Open Farm 2024
Agri Aware Open Farm 2024
Tirlán was delighted to support the recent Open Farm event on the dairy farm of our milk suppliers, Stephen and Áine Byrne.
The recent Open Farm event on the dairy farm of our milk suppliers, Stephen and Áine Byrne, was a remarkable success, attracting over 2,550 people. Organised by Agri Aware in conjunction with Tirlán and supported by NDC. The Open Farm event is a key part of their mission to enhance agricultural literacy.
In addition to the public day held on Saturday, June 15th, this year’s event featured a school’s day on Friday, June 14th, where 450 primary school students from Kildare and Dublin had the chance to see first-hand how local Irish food, particularly dairy products, are produced. This initiative aimed to give the next generation an appreciation of where their food comes from.

On Saturday, attendees of all ages were able to experience a working farm, learning about the environmentally sustainable practices that are integral to modern farming. The event included a self-guided tour of the Byrne family’s dairy farm, a mini-farm village showcasing various Irish agricultural production systems, cooking demonstrations, children’s games, and the opportunity to taste delicious local Irish food and sample some of Avonmore’s Mooju chocolate milk at the Avonmore Milk Bar which supplied over 1,200 samples of Avonmore Mooju and Fresh Milk.
Host farmer Stephen Byrne also shared his pride in the event, highlighting the importance of educating both young and old about the care and sustainability involved in food production. Stephen and Áine said the school’s day was of utmost importance to them, as no textbook will educate the next generation better on where their food comes from than seeing it in person and hearing about its production from industry experts.
At Tirlán, we remain dedicated to supporting initiatives that celebrate sustainable farming practices and engage with the community in meaningful ways. We continue to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of the vital role agriculture plays in our daily lives.

Farming for the Future: Open Farm Walk & Talk

Farming for the Future: Open Farm Walk & Talk
Over 300 farmers attended the Tirlán and Teagasc ‘Farming for the Future’ water quality event.
Farmers across Ireland gathers for the Tirlán and Teagasc ‘Farming for the Future’ water quality event on the farm of Donal & Fiona Kavanagh, near Baltinglass, Co Wicklow. The event explored farming in derogation while maintaining good water quality. It offered farmers action-focused advice and showed the significant efforts that farmers are undertaking to stabilise and improve water quality in their region.
As part of Tirlán’s collaborative ‘Farming for Water: River Slaney’ project with Teagasc and LawPro, we are working to improve water quality and assist Ireland in putting the best possible case forward for retention of the Nitrates Derogation.

The event heard that a focus on nutrient use efficiency (NUE) on farm can deliver or maintain higher output at a lower cost. Teagasc Director Dr Frank O’Mara highlighted that it is possible to farm in derogation at the current 220kg of organic nitrogen (N) per hectare (N/ha) and deliver good water quality.
Dr Lisa Koep, Chief ESG Officer, said the turnout for the event on Donal Kavanagh’s farm showcases how focused the farmer-owned cooperative’s suppliers are on improving water quality, while also improving the economic sustainability of their farms.
“Farmers are truly committed to making the changes on their farms to address water quality challenges. Events like this are taking place all over the country and are hugely important. It showcases to all of the stakeholders that we are committed as an industry to improving our water quality.”

On water quality Tirlán’s good work continues, with almost 800 farm visits completed in 2023. This good work is paying dividend, with the most recent EPA report showing a marginal improvement of water quality in the South-East.
Speakers at the event included representatives from Tirlán, Teagasc, Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA), the ICMSA and Local Authority Waters Programme (LawPro).
