Food Standards Save Lives
Tirlán colleagues participated in this year’s Food Safety Day in a number of creative ways
Did you know that foodborne diseases affect one in 10 people worldwide each year?
The WHO’s World Food Safety Day on June 7th every year aims to draw attention to food standards, helping us to ensure what we eat is safe.
Tirlán recognised this annual event with Food and Feed Safety Week (June 6th to 8th). There was fantastic engagement from Tirlán colleagues online and across a number of sites as presentations were made by external subject matter experts from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, Teagasc Moorepark, Acheta Pest Management and University College Dublin.
On World Food Safety Day Professors Patrick Wall and Francis Butler presented to colleagues in Belview on the importance of food and feed safety to Tirlán’s business
In addition to the insights provided by food safety experts, Operation Site teams engaged in a number of creative ways, including food safety quizzes, a foreign body memory game, best practices for plant cleaning and personal hygiene and reiterating the importance of contaminant awareness in equine feed.
Some of Tirlán’s Operations Colleagues in Belview also took part in a video explaining their roles in Food Safety, which you can watch below.
Billy Carr, Food and Feed Safety Risk Manager, reflected on the success of the initiative. “Tirlán has demonstrated through our management commitment and willingness of our site teams to develop and share knowledge and best practice, that we are committed to the legal requirement to promote and improve Food and Feed Safety Culture in our business. This is the second year of this annual initiative – we will continue to promote awareness of existing and emerging risks to our products and brands. We’re very grateful for the time and commitment shown by Tirlán teams through their active participation in the week’s events.”
Joe Tierney, Head of Regulatory, Food and Feed Safety added: “It was a great privilege to be involved in this year’s WHO World Food Safety Day celebrations. I felt proud to see the active engagement and drive of all our teams to celebrate the week’s activities. The event highlighted the strong synergies with our own food safety culture and the overall Q+C strategic direction statement of ‘Safety first, Food Safety Always and Compliance everyday’. I look forward to another successful event in 2024 and thank all involved in promoting and bringing to life the intent of world food safety day – ‘food standards saves lives’.”
